Visual Voices at the Haworth

An exhibition of Art from Mount Carmel, Norden, Hollins and Rhyddings 24th July - 30th August 2010

A group of our students have had the wonderful opportunity of working closely with Yvonne Robins from the Haworth Art gallery in Accrington in the organisation of an Art Exhibition featuring Hyndburn High schools.
They came up a name for the exhibition - 'Visual Voices' and designed posters, invitations, leaflets and information sheets. The students have also helped write a press release and have sent out a mail shot to many venues across the North West.
They are currently mounting and framing all the pieces of work selected from the high schools to be exhibited and will be hanging the work in the gallery and preparing for the preview.
The exhibition will be open from Saturday 24th July - 30th August 2010

Leavers Prom 2010
Our Year 11 students enjoyed a lovely evening at Mytton Fold Hotel for their Leavers Prom on Thursday 1 July.
They all looked wonderful and were a credit to our school community. They will be greatly missed. Good luck to you all.

School Sports Week

Mount Carmel P.E. department organised a week full of sports activities for our students including Golf lessons at Accrington Golf Club, participation in an inter-schools Athletics competition and fun activities for Years 7 and 8.

The week culminated in our whole school Sports Day. We were fortunate to enjoy good weather despite heavy rain during the night. Students (and teachers) participated in tug-of-war competitions, sack races, three legged races, sprints and egg and spoon races.

Southworth came out worthy winners despite strong opposition from our other Houses; Arrowsmith, Clitherow, Hurst and Rigby.

The candidates for Head Students for 2010-2011 produced very strong presentations during their recent interviews and the Senior Leadership Team at Mount Carmel were faced with an extremely tough decision. After much deliberating they are pleased to announce the Head Students for the academic year 2010-2011 will be as follows:
Head Boy - John McKenna-Hughes   Head Girl - Uzma Ali
Deputy Head Boy - Adam Dad  Deputy Head Girl - Bethany Bolton
Senior Prefects - Louis McKenna, Tyler Whittaker-Law, Naomi Bury, Jessica Mason, Abbie Newson, Bethany Thompson and Abbie Walsh.

We would like to thank our current Head Boy and Head Girl, Joel and Ellis along with the Deputy Head Boy, Deputy Head Girl and Senior Prefects for all their hard work over the past year and wish them every success in their future studies. They have been great ambassadors for Mount Carmel and we are sure that our new team will be just as successful.

BBC Film Crew

BBC Horizon is producing a programme for the 10th Anniversary of the Human Genome Project. One of the genetic conditions they are profiling is Cystic Fibrosis. Mount Carmel's Academic Mentor, Miss S. Longton who has Cystic Fibrosis has been chosen to feature in the programme.

The BBC has been in school filming Miss Longton at work with the students. The programme will be aired on BBC2 in the Autumn. We will publish details nearer to the time on our website.

Rebecca bowls them over!

Well done to Year 8 student Rebecca, who has been chosen by the British Tenpin Bowling Association to represent England at the World Sports Festival in Vienna this Summer.

Good luck Rebecca, we hope you get those strikes!

A Hard Act to Follow
Congratulations must go to Year 10 student, John, who after a gruelling audition at the Manchester ZION Arts Centre on 19th February, has gained a place on a National Youth Theatre Acting course which takes place this Summer!
The course will be in London at the critically acclaimed venue, LABAN in Greenwich. The competition for a place was exceptionally tough this year and the NYT had its highest number of applications ever, so this was a truly brilliant achievement.

Well done, John, and we wish you good luck – or should we say Break a Leg??!
